(June 25, 2025) A new AI-powered social media account called Divacrats (@divacrats) is turning heads and using parody to turn lawmakers into drag icons. Launched at the end of Pride month, Divacrats uses generative AI to transform pro-LGBTQ+ politicians into glamorous drag personas as a way to thank them for their consistent advocacy, all while raising emergency funds for The Trevor Project’s LGBTQ+ Youth Suicide Prevention Services.  Check out @divacrats on Instagram and TikTok, and on its merch store at divacrats.com.

Divacrats’ message is simple and powerful: “No Kings. Only Queens.” It arrives just days after the Trump administration announced the termination of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline’s LGBTQ+ Youth Specialized Services program, a federally funded crisis line that served more than 1.3 million people. Divacrats aims to direct attention toward joy, gratitude, and action, spotlighting allies in elected office and the public eye while raising money from merch sales to help fill the funding gap left by this decision.

Divacrats was created by Matt and John, a married gay couple who describe themselves as “two geeky husbands using AI for good.” The couple have been working in generative AI and saw its potential for positive activism through drag.  Matt, a technology entrepreneur who began his career as a high school teacher in Florida with Teach for America (TFA), is not new to LGBTQ+ activism for trans people in his former business or when it comes to protecting queer kids through suicide prevention initiatives; during his time as a teacher he worked with a team of educators to help shape TFA’s collaboration with The Trevor Project and GLSEN (The Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network) to develop resources to help make classrom safe spaces and with TFA’s “It Gets Better Project” video. 

“As a queer adult American who is in a really happy place, it’s now commonplace to read the news and feel despair and hopelessness about how our rights are being systematically stripped away… especially for our trans friends.  It just makes you cry on a regular basis.  Then you pause and think about what it must be like growing up as a trans kid in today’s America, and that feeling turns from despair and sadness to absolute anger and outrage,” said Matt.  “Taking away funding for the LGBTQ+ youth suicide prevention hotline is absolutely cruel.  We decided to turn that anger into action with AI.”

“Divacrats isn’t about mocking or shaming,” John (an AI and Machine Learning Research Scientist) explained. “It’s about celebrating the leaders and lawmakers who continually and consistently show up for our Big Beautiful Queer Community (and not just in June) and deserve to feel fabulous doing it.  Divacrats is our way of putting some positivity back into the fight and telling America’s leaders that we support them for supporting our community.  Please keep going… we truly need your help.”

The project was inspired by the viral Instagram account RuPublicans, but Divacrats focuses on lifting up queer allies rather than shaming anti-LGBTQ+ opponents.  Each portrait uses AI image generation tools to create a stylized drag version of a real-life lawmaker or leader, complete with a ru-tastic drag name, tagline, and caption tied to their legislative history. 

In addition to the portraits, Divacrats is a fundraising initiative. $1 of every $10 spent on Divacrats merch featuring the AI-generated artwork (like mugs, postcards, prints, and bags) is being donated to The Trevor Project, which provides free and confidential suicide prevention services for LGBTQ+ youth. The rest supports Matt and John’s journey toward starting their own family through surrogacy. 

“Divacrats is about love, joy, and acknowledgment.  If any featured leader would like their image removed or altered, we are happy to make adjustments or take it down,” said John. “We want you to feel fabulous for the work you’ve done (and will do).”

The couple also teased that Divacrats is just the beginning of their deep dive into AI for activism. “We are working on our next AI project and it is going to be HUUUGE,” said Matt, grinning. “If you like Divacrats, you are going to LOVE what’s coming next.
